Universal quantum computation with the =5/2 fractional quantum Hall state

چکیده
We consider topological quantum computation TQC with a particular class of anyons that are believed to exist in the fractional quantum Hall effect state at Landau-level filling fraction =5/2. Since the braid group representation describing the statistics of these anyons is not computationally universal, one cannot directly apply the standard TQC technique. We propose to use very noisy nontopological operations such as direct short-range interactions between anyons to simulate a universal set of gates. Assuming that all TQC operations are implemented perfectly, we prove that the threshold error rate for nontopological operations is above 14%. The total number of nontopological computational elements that one needs to simulate a quantum circuit with L gates scales as L ln L 3.

Braiding and Entanglement in Nonabelian Quantum Hall States
Certain fractional quantum Hall states, including the experimentally observed ν = 5/2 state, and, possibly, the ν = 12/5 state, may have a sufficiently rich form of topological order (i.e. they may be nonabelian) to be used for topological quantum computation, an intrinsically fault tolerant form of quantum computation which is carried out by braiding the world lines of quasiparticle excitation...
متن کاملThe fractional quantum Hall effect in wide quantum wells
Currently, there is a strong interest in the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor ν = 5/2, observed in state-of-the-art GaAs based two-dimensional electron systems. This interest stems from the potential relevance of this ground state for topological quantum computation resulting from the non-Abelian statistics its quasi-particle excitations are predicted to obey. Pa...
متن کاملFractionalizing Majorana fermions: non-abelian statistics on the edges of abelian quantum Hall states
We study the non-abelian statistics characterizing systems where counter-propagating gapless modes on the edges of fractional quantum Hall states are gapped by proximity-coupling to superconductors and ferromagnets. The most transparent example is that of a fractional quantum spin Hall state, in which electrons of one spin direction occupy a fractional quantum Hall state of ν = 1/m, while elect...
متن کاملPermutation-symmetric critical phases in disordered non-Abelian anyonic chains
Topological phases supporting non-Abelian anyonic excitations have been proposed as candidates for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we study disordered non-Abelian anyonic chains based on the quantum groups SU 2 k, a hierarchy that includes the =5 /2 fractional quantum Hall state and the proposed =12 /5 Fibonacci state, among others. We find that for odd k these anyonic chains re...
متن کاملImaging Anyons with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
Anyons are exotic quasiparticles with fractional charge that can emerge as fundamental excitations of strongly interacting topological quantum phases of matter. Unlike ordinary fermions and bosons, they may obey non-Abelian statistics—a property that would help realize fault-tolerant quantum computation. NonAbelian anyons have long been predicted to occur in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) ph...
